This has been one of the major line of attack against this film; that it portrays the Mesoamericans as bloodthirsty savages. First, I’m not certain if the critics actually saw the movie, since Gibson actually creates a fairly nuanced narrative amidst all the carnage.Keep commenting ladies!! What is your favorite lip gloss?? Second, the Mayans are portrayed as being more alien than barbarian, which to modern sensibilities, they undoubtedly were. The “happy tree hugger” image of the first Americans is both wrong and condescending. Third, by the standards of early 21st century America, the Mayans, Aztecs and so forth would appear to be brutal, even monstrous.
